Noel M. Gaynor

December 23, 1953 — May 20, 2025

Olean- Noel M. Gaynor

Noel M. Gaynor of 201 ½ Center Street, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at his home from an apparent heart attack.

Noel grew up during “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland. He fought to defend the oppressed Irish people as a member of the Irish Republican Army. Noel served 14 years in Long Kesh prison as a political prisoner. Shortly after getting out of Long Kesh, he moved to the United States, married his penpal, Colleen Connelly, and started a family in 1990. After an attempt by the US government to deport him in 1993, he began his legal battle to remain in the US with his American family. Noel was granted that privilege in 1998. He lived peacefully for many years as a legal immigrant, enjoying a simple life. Noel spent his years in America working hard as a construction laborer for a union in New York City, and then later on, as a bartender here in Olean, where many came to know and love him.

Noel had two daughters, Sinead and Brady, whom he loved with all of his heart. He loved traveling around the country with them, catching concerts, and taking them to breakfast. In 2005, Noel and Colleen separated but remained close friends. He could be seen out at all the local Stick Tights shows. She continued to lovingly cut his hair.

Noel enjoyed golfing with all of his friends. He loved listening to good music, his favorites being Leonard Cohen, Luke Kelly, and the Pogues. He loved fishing, watching Irish football, and Miller Lites.

Noel worked behind the bar of Talty’s until the day he passed. Above all, he loved making his loved ones laugh. He had many, many loved ones in Olean…enough to fill the entire newspaper. He will be sorely missed by his family and his community.

Noel is survived by; 2 daughters, Sinead A. Gaynor of Bend, OR and Brady A. Gaynor of Boulder, CO; a brother Gabriel (Sandra) Gaynor of Sidney, Australia; and nieces and nephews, including Michelle, Damien, Nicole and Julie.

Noel was predeceased by; his parents and a brother, Brendan Gaynor.

There will be a private celebration for his friends and family in the coming week. Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St. Online condolences may be made at www.letromcintoshspinkfuneralhome.com
