Joseph M. Champlin of Genesee Street passed away at his home on Friday, October 13, 2023, surrounded by his family, following a brief battle with cancer.

 

Joe was born on July 19, 1947, in Rochester and was the son of Lawrence L. and Betty Geise Champlin. On July 11, 1970, at the Hillside Wesleyan Church in Olean, he married his loving wife, Nancy Helen Marsh, who survives.

 

Joe attended grade schools in Olean, Millport, Ellicottville, Roulette, and finally Hinsdale Central School, where he graduated from in 1966. November 28, 1966, Joe enlisted in the United States Army where he served until November 11, 1969. During his time in the military Joe traveled to many parts of the world. He was first stationed in Germany for 18 months in the 31st Surgical Hospital under the 7th medical brigade. After his time in the Army, Joe went to Jamestown Community College to earn an Associate Degree in Science in May 1978. He continued his education at the State University of Buffalo in 1978 for grade III water treatment course and Syracuse University for grade A water treatment plant operator’s course in 1980.

 

Joe worked for McKean Machinery Sales from 1969 to1972, then became an inspector at McGraw Edison from 1973 to 1975, and lastly the City of Olean Water Filtration Plant for 24 years from 1978 to 2002, where he was a plant operator and maintenance mechanic until his retirement in 2002.

 

Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, many kinds of music, vacationing, auto races, and traveling domestically and internationally while in the military.  His true passion was all sports. He enjoyed watching pro sports, high school sports, and college sports. He even coached PeeWee Football and Farm League and Little League Baseball. 

 

Beside his loving wife Nancy, Joe is survived by two his children; Bret J. (Maria) Champlin of El Paso, TX., Aimee S. (Tommy Joyce) Yaworsky of Great Valley, two grandchildren; Sierra Champlin and Hunter Yaworsky, sisters Kathleen Layman and Gail (James) Everitt, his brother Lawrence E. (Lorraine) Champlin, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Joe was predeceased by his parents, infant grandson Tristan Champlin, and brother-in-law, Larry O. Layman.

 

Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11:00am at the Christ United Methodist Church 633 Linwood Ave Olean, where the Rev. Chad Sayers will officiate.
