Richard S. George of 1634 Goodrich Avenue, formerly of 935 Queen Street, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Olean General Hospital following a long illness.

Mr. George was born on June 8, 1931 in Orchard Park, NY and was the son of Elmer and Florence Smith George. On August 4, 1951, he married the former Nancy E. Littlejohns, who predeceased him on March 8, 2009.

Mr. George worked for Columbia Gas from 1950 to 1952. He served in the US Marine Corps from April 9, 1952 to March 25, 1954 during the Korean War. Following his military service, Mr. George returned to Columbia Gas, where he worked for 44 years until his retirement in 1994. He then became a consultant for Riley Gas out of Charlestown, WV until September of 2008.

Mr. George was a former member of Hillside Wesleyan Church, where he was a Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School Teacher. He also formerly attended Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. George was a past member of the Independent Oil and Gas Association of both New York and Pennsylvania. He was also a past member on the Quarter Century Club of Columbia Gas, Member of the Olean Chamber of Commerce and member on the New York State American Legion. In 1981 Mr. George was appointed by the New York Governor Hugh Carey to the NYS Oil, Gas & Solution Mining Advisory Board. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, golf, but especially spending time with his family.

Mr. George is survived by four daughters, Amy E. (Steve) Wilson of Binghamton, NY, Ann M. (William) of Fredonia, NY, Nanette K. Higgins of Olean, and Alison D. (Jerry) Swain of Mount Morris, NY; four brothers, Rev. Robert (Millicent) George of Enola, PA, Edward George of Olean, Gordon (Rosanne) George of Allegany, and Paul (Sherry) George of Olean; a sister, Arlene (Richard) Bice of Alabama; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Galeazzo, Renee Birt, Karen Humbert, Michele Wilson, Allen Wilson, Jessica Higgins, Leah Swain, Matthew Swain, Katelyn Swain; two great grandchildren, Bradley Galeazzo, Ashlynn Galeazzo; a sister-in-law, Patricia D. Salvan of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. George was predeceased by a son, Curtis R. George in 1975 and a sister, Dorothy George.

Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, on Monday, August 9, 2010 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 11:00AM. The Rev. Andrew Bashwinger, Pastor of Grace Alliance Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olean.
